Drum Major Workshop Description

 

 

 

Maximum Number of Participants: 20

 

Equipment Needed: All participants must bring their own mace and/or drum major baton and whistle.

 

Target Group: Current drum majors in marching units (high school/church band/community bands) as well as “aspiring” drum majors.

 

Workshop Objective: Participants will possess necessary interpersonal, leadership, music, and performance skills for the general overseeing of a band program.

 

Skill Prerequisites (What do participants need to know prior to attending this workshop?): n/a

Interpersonal Skills  

Ø              Peer motivation

Ø              Conflict Resolution

Ø              Understanding Your Band

Ø              The Dos and Don’ts of Being a Drum Major

Ø              Effective Communication Verbal, Nonverbal, and Written

Ø              Musical Skills

Ø              Conducting Patterns

Ø              Conducting to fit the style of music being played

Ø              Conducting on the Move

 

Performance Skills

Ø              Maintaining Physical Shape and Nutrition

Ø              Posture and Carriage

Ø              Voice/Whistle Commands

Ø              Various Marching Styles

Ø              Performing to Your Strengths

Ø              Preparing for Competition

 

*All concepts taught during workshops will need to be reinforced in order for participants to fully develop skills.
