DRUM MAJORS

Antwan Bailey
Antwan Bailey is from Surry County, Virginia. He has been around marching bands since the age of three and after seeing the Smithfield High School Marching Pack, he knew that band was something he would want to pursue. He began studying music at Surry County High School when he entered concert band playing the trumpet under the tutelage of Mr. Donovan Wells. Mr. Bailey marched trumpet for two years; one under Mr. Wells and then under the direction of Mr. Alvin W. Wilson II. He then served as drum major of the Surry County High School Marching Cougar Band for three years. He garnered the nickname “Dr. Twirl” due to his intricate twirling techniques and during this period he received several competitive awards. Mr. Bailey placed no lower than third in competition including an undefeated senior season in 1998. He has recorded multiple perfect scores.
After graduating from Saint Paul’s College, he began assisting with the Sussex Central High School Marching band program training drum majors. The drum majors there were very successful, bringing the Sussex Central Band its first winning drum major trophies in history. He began working with the Lakeland High School Marching “Quiet Storm” exclusively in 2012 and under his tutelage the drum majors have had tremendous success winning a total of eight trophies in eight competitions with five of them being first place awards and all of them having superior scores.

Isaac Lee
Isaac Lee is a graduate of Sussex Central High school where he began his band career in the sixth grade as a trumpet player. He later moved to the percussion line and finally became drum major during his junior year. Isaac gained a reputation for being a great marcher as well as showman. His drum major name “Captain Fabulous” was earned after a judge’s comment in competition. Isaac brought awards to the Sussex Central High School band program that had never been won before. He remains the most decorated drum major in Sussex Central history. Upon graduation, Isaac attended Virginia State University and joined the Orange Thunder percussion line. He then became drum major the following year of the Trojan Explosion, where once again his style and flair for performance gained him praise from home and visiting football crowds. Isaac has a serious passion for band and a love for performance that keeps him on the cusp of the craft.

Kiera Ricks
Kiera Ricks is a graduate of Lakeland High School where she served as drum major of the Lakeland High School Marching Quiet Storm. On the field she garnered the name “Ms. N.D.E” which stands for Ninety Degrees of Elegance. Her name signified the hard work and show style for which she became known. Because she was a female, she immediately grabbed the audience’s attention and once the first step was taken she never lost it. She was known for being precise in her movements, a great marcher, an excellent conductor, and for having control of the band at all times. Kiera served as Drum Major at Lakeland for two years winning a school record four first place awards out of eight competitions receiving superior scores in each. She is currently a freshman at Old Dominion University, majoring in Therapeutic Recreation with a minor in Psychology.

Carlos Garrett
Carlos Garrett is a Waverly, Virginia native. He graduated from Sussex Central High School where he participated in the marching band on the percussion line. While he did not serve as a drum major in high school, Carlos possessed many leadership qualities that made him stand out from the rest of his peers. Upon entering Virginia Union University in 2012, he joined the newly reorganized “Ambassadors of Sound” Marching Band under the direction of Mrs. Fayesha Cousins. At the end of his freshman year, his call to be a leader could not be denied as he was selected as the next drum major. He currently remains at Virginia Union in that capacity.
